Martyn Day

Martyn Day is Chair of CHEM Trust’s Board of Trustees. He is the Senior Partner at Leigh Day & Co so­licitors in London, and specialises in international, environment and product liability claims.  Examples of his work are the Sellafield leukaemia cases, asbestos cases and negotiating claims for 52 Colombian farmers in a claim against BP relating to the damage caused by an oil pipeline.

He is an Executive Committee Member of the Society of Labour Lawyers, a Director of Greenpeace Environmental Trust (he stood down in 2006 from being the Chair of Greenpeace UK, after ten years on its Board) and a member of the Association of Professional Injury Lawyers. He is also a member of the Advisory Group of the Independent Lawyer, and the Amnesty International Business Group.

In addition, Martyn is co-author of 'Toxic Torts', 'Personal Injury Handbook', 'Multi-Party Actions' and 'Environmental Action: A Citizens Guide', and also regularly addresses lectures, seminars and the media on environmental issues.


 


 nigel haigh

Nigel Haigh, OBE

Nigel Haigh helped to found the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and was a Vice-President (1975-79).  In 1980 he opened the London office of the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) and was its director until his retirement in 1998.   Nigel was also a founder member of the Green Alliance in 1978 and was its Chairman from 1989 to 1997.  He has served on the Board of the Environment Agency (for England and Wales) (1995-2000) and was appointed by the European Parliament to the Management Board of the European Environment Agency (2000-2005). 

Nigel has also served as specialist adviser to the House of Lords European Scrutiny Committee for reports on a range of environmental topics including chemicals.  He has published a book ‘EEC Environmental Policy and Britain’ (1984) which became the foundation for IEEP's loose-leaf  'Manual of Environmental Policy: the EU and Britain' which he edited till 2006.

Leslie Jones, OBE

Leslie Jones is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance, a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Accountants and a Member of the Institute of Water and Environment Managers.  Les had a long career in the Water Industry, including Thames Water and the National Rivers Authority, which included many environmental aspects.

In 1996 he joined WWF as Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Finance and Services.  Since leaving WWF in 2003 Les has worked as a consultant to many charities.  Recently he also spent some time as acting Director of Finance of Natural England.  He is also a Hon. Treasurer for several charities including the Ponds Conservation Trust and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust.

Oliver Smith

Oliver Smith is the Deputy Director of Programmes at WWF-UK.  Before joining WWF he was a computer programmer, management consultant and IT director of a computer retail company.  In a career over ten years in WWF he has worked in Fundraising, for the Chief Executive and was in charge of Strategy and Performance Management for WWF-UK and was the principle author of the WWF-UK strategy for 2006-2010. He was acting Director of Conservation from January until July 2007.

He is now in charge of national teams in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Sustainable Consumption and Programme Development Teams at the headquarters of WWF-UK, and sits on a variety of WWF network committees including the Conservation Committee. As well as being a Trustee of CHEM Trust he is also a Trustee of ARC, the Alliance of Religions and Conservation.
